How to add a new CMS item in Webflow?

Flowversity··2 min read

Once you've created a CMS Collection in Webflow, the next step is populating it with content. Each entry in a Collection is called a Collection Item — a single record that follows the field structure you defined. You can add items from either the Designer or the Dashboard.

Adding a CMS item to your Collection

From the Designer

  1. Open your project in the Webflow Designer.
  2. Click the CMS icon in the left sidebar.
  3. Select the Collection you want to add to.
  4. Click Add new item (top-right corner).
  5. Fill in each field — title, slug, rich text, images, references, and any other fields you configured.
  6. Click Save to keep it as a draft, or toggle the Published switch to publish it immediately.

From the Dashboard

  1. Go to your project's Dashboard in Webflow.
  2. Click the CMS tab in the top navigation.
  3. Choose your Collection from the list.
  4. Click Add new item.
  5. Complete the fields and choose Save as draft or Publish.

Key things to know:

  • The Name and Slug fields are always required.
  • If you leave the slug blank, Webflow auto-generates one from the item name.
  • Items default to Draft status. Publishing makes them live on your Collection Pages and visible in Collection Lists.
  • You can also bulk-import items using a CSV file from the Dashboard CMS tab — useful when migrating content from another platform.
  • On paid Site plans, you can enable Editor access so team members can add and manage items without opening the Designer.

Adding items is straightforward once your Collection structure is set. The fields you see match exactly what you defined when creating the Collection — no surprises.
