How to create a blog post in Webflow CMS?

Flowversity··3 min read

Webflow's CMS lets you manage blog content without touching code. Posts are stored as items in a Collection, and they render on your site using a Template page you design once. Here is how to create a new blog post from start to finish.

Prerequisites

Before you can write a blog post, you need a Blog Collection set up in your project. If you don't have one yet, create a Collection with at least these fields:

  • Name (Plain Text) — the post title
  • Slug (Plain Text) — the URL path
  • Content (Rich Text) — the post body
  • Featured image (Image) — the hero image
  • Published date (Date) — when the post goes live

Most Webflow templates include a Blog Collection out of the box with these fields already configured.

Creating a blog post

From the Designer

  1. Open your project in the Webflow Designer.
  2. Click the CMS icon in the left sidebar.
  3. Select your Blog Collection.
  4. Click Add new item (top right).
  5. Fill in the fields:
  • Enter the post title in the Name field.
  • The slug auto-generates from the title — edit it if needed.
  • Write or paste your content in the Rich Text field.
  • Upload or choose a featured image.
  • Set the published date.
  • Fill in any additional fields your Collection uses (excerpt, category, author, etc.).
  1. Click Save to save as a draft, or Publish to make it live.

From the Webflow Editor (for clients)

If you've enabled the Editor for your site, content editors can create posts without opening the Designer:

  1. Open the live site while logged in.
  2. Click the pencil icon in the bottom-left corner to enter editing mode.
  3. Navigate to the blog section or use the CMS panel.
  4. Click Add new to create a post.
  5. Fill in the fields and click Publish.

From the Webflow Dashboard

  1. Go to your project in the Webflow Dashboard.
  2. Click the CMS tab.
  3. Select your Blog Collection.
  4. Click Add new item.
  5. Fill in the fields and save or publish.

Draft vs. published

  • Draft posts are saved but not visible on the live site. Use this to work on posts over time.
  • Published posts appear on your live site immediately (or on the scheduled date if you set one).
  • You can toggle between draft and published status at any time.

SEO fields

When creating a blog post, also set the SEO fields for the Collection item:

  • Meta title — the title that appears in search engine results.
  • Meta description — a short summary for search results.
  • Open Graph image — the image shown when the post is shared on social media.

These fields are typically found under the SEO section at the bottom of the item editor. If your Collection doesn't have them, add Plain Text fields for meta title and meta description, and an Image field for the OG image.
