How to edit a CMS Collection field in Webflow?
After creating a CMS Collection, you may need to modify its field structure — renaming a field, changing its type, or adding new ones as your content evolves. Webflow lets you edit Collection fields from the Designer, but there are constraints worth knowing about before you start.
Editing a Collection field in Webflow
Accessing field settings
- Open your project in the Webflow Designer.
- Click the CMS icon in the left sidebar.
- Select the Collection you want to modify.
- Click the Settings gear icon on the Collection (or click Edit collection from the three-dot menu).
- You'll see the full list of fields. Click on any field to expand its settings.
What you can edit
- Display name and help text — rename fields or update the helper text shown to content editors. This has no effect on your data.
- Required toggle — change whether a field must be filled in before saving an item.
- Validation rules — for fields like Plain Text or Number, adjust character limits or value ranges.
What you cannot change
- Field type — you cannot convert a Plain Text field to Rich Text, or an Image field to a Reference. To change a field type, you must delete the existing field and create a new one with the correct type.
- Field slug (internal ID) — the identifier Webflow uses internally is locked after creation.
Adding new fields
You can add new fields to an existing Collection at any time. Click Add field in the Collection settings, choose the type, configure it, and save. Existing items will have the new field empty by default.
Deleting fields
Removing a field deletes its data from all items in that Collection. This action cannot be undone. Webflow will warn you before confirming.
Best practice: Before restructuring a live Collection, duplicate the site or test changes in a staging environment. Removing fields is permanent and affects all content instantly.
